Superintendent Langnes presented the Lewiston School Department’s proposed fiscal 2027 budget, describing reductions that lowered the local ask to about $32.9 million and noting roughly $89 million of the school package comes from state subsidy. Superintendent Langnes said the approved budget represented about a 4.35% increase overall and estimated the mill-rate impact at about $68.85 on a $150,000 home.
Councilors questioned position cuts and the number of jobs removed; Langnes said the district eliminated roughly 31 positions to balance the budget and listed vacancies and grants that reduced the local ask. Public commenters addressed graduation outcomes, special-education reductions and county/state funding uncertainties. Teachers and community members urged approval, warning that cutting the budget would harm students and programs.
After discussion and public comment, the council passed the school budget on a roll call vote, 6–1. Administrators reminded voters that absentee ballots already issued for the school referendum may be returned after the council’s vote and outlined early-voting dates.
Next steps: The budget proceeds to the scheduled school referendum (noted in meeting materials) and the administration will publish absentee-voting guidance and reminders for residents.
