Tara Mattie of the Convention & Visitors Bureau introduced John Treling, park and watercraft manager at Lake Milton State Park, who told Mahoning County commissioners on June 4 that provisional data indicate the park receives more than 1 million visitors annually.
Treling described recent and ongoing investments at Lake Milton: a storybook trail, upgraded campgrounds and visitor centers across the Ohio State Parks system, a concert and fireworks tied to America 250, and new amenities at Lake Milton itself, including a self-service kayak kiosk at the Point View boat ramp. He said the park’s designation as an unlimited-horsepower lake attracts power-boaters while continuing to offer paddle-craft options and fishing.
"Lake Milton is a destination. It's pulling people into the valley," Treling said, noting there are no launch or beach fees and describing cabin and recreation options near the lake.
In a question-and-answer exchange, Treling said the concessionaire handling boat rentals is West Branch Marina LLC (power boats, kayaks and canoes) and that weekend reservations are recommended for specific power boats. He described the kayak kiosk process: users download an app, follow the kiosk directions and launch from the nearby kayak ramp.
Treling credited county and federal infrastructure work—specifically sewer improvements supported by USDA funding—with removing failing septic systems and improving water quality. He said one remaining segment around the northern corner of the lake still requires work.
Commissioners and attendees noted rising real-estate values around the lake, mountain-bike trail openings, eagle nests and past community events such as a large boat armada. Several commissioners used the discussion to remind residents to watch for children now that school is out and to drive carefully near work zones.
Tara Mattie also promoted the convention bureau’s summer events brochure (visit exploremahoning.com) and cited upcoming festivals including Riverfest, Ribs & Rock and the Simply Slavic Festival. The board thanked Treling for the update and accepted invitations to consider meeting or holding events near Lake Milton in the coming weeks.
The presentation concluded with an invitation for commissioners and staff to tour the park; the meeting then moved to other business and adjourned.
