The McLean County Finance Committee voted Wednesday to approve a revocable license allowing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Readjustment Counseling (Peoria Vet Center) to use county property for weekly counseling visits and mobile-unit outreach.
Art, representing the Veterans Assistance Commission, told the committee the Vet Center sends a counselor to the county every Wednesday and that the program focuses on combat-related trauma and related supports: "That program's been one that's been very good for us ... this is part of the reason why we've had zero suicides for two and a half years," he said. He also described plans for a new mobile unit to bring showers and physical checkups to veterans in rural areas.
Chair Layman and committee members praised the commission's outreach. The motion to place the item on the floor was made by Member Klaus and seconded by Member Bessler; the license was approved by voice vote.
At the meeting the commission also announced staff changes. The commission named Conan Calhoun as interim superintendent and added Amanda Hartley as an administrative assistant; leaders said they will continue targeted outreach in small towns where residents may not be aware of available services.
The license approved Wednesday is intended to continue the Peoria Vet Center's in-person counseling visits and local outreach. The committee did not discuss fee terms beyond approving the request; the action was recorded as a committee approval with no further conditions announced.
