The Beloit School District board spent the bulk of its special meeting debating draft Budget Option D but failed to give the superintendent a clear majority direction to finalize a budget.
Superintendent Wayne Anderson presented Option D as a compromise package informed by board polling: it restores elementary dean positions and a CTE director, trims other positions and proposes eliminating the director of school health while reducing nursing positions. He urged the board to identify any additions or deletions that would garner a majority so he could bring a plan back for approval at the June 16 regular meeting.
Discussion turned to facilities, with some board members urging faster consolidation of underused buildings (naming Cunningham and Wright as possibilities) to reduce costs and others urging a needs‑driven assessment and a deliberate plan that preserves student services. Several trustees said they would resist making deep staff cuts that would reduce student‑facing personnel; others said using one‑time reserve funds (OPED/fund equity) to avoid immediate layoffs would leave the district vulnerable in future years.
Multiple motions to adopt Option D with different amendments were proposed and taken to roll‑call votes. An amendment to add grant‑plan reporting language passed unanimously, but broader motions — including directives to close Cunningham and Wright next year or to adopt Option D while restoring media specialists to 1.0 FTE — failed on 3–4 roll calls. Dr. Anderson said he did not have a clear majority preference to act on and that he could not produce a final budget without clearer board direction.
Trustees agreed on the need for further facilities planning, long‑range financial modeling and more specific grant and staffing plans before taking final budget action. The board did not adopt any final budget at the meeting; members extended the meeting and then moved into closed session to review student expulsion orders.
