A resident, who identified himself as Gabe, told the commission he was thrown from his skateboard and had gravel get into his shoes on sidewalks and crosswalks after recent chip sealing on Marble near South Second Street and Crystal Circle. "The loose gravel gets on the sidewalk and the crosswalk. This makes skateboarding nearly impossible," Gabe said during public comment, adding that the pebble-strewn surfaces also make bicycling harder and are an impediment to walking.
Kevin, the public-works project lead, responded that the treatment is chip sealing and described it as a preventive, cost-effective method to protect pavement. "It's one of the most cost-effective measures that we have to take care of the streets... it's basically protecting the pavement," he said, and explained that crews let the material "set" and then broom loose rock once it has been worked into the surface. Kevin assured Gabe that crews would broom the loose material "in the next couple days." The commission encouraged patience during the short settling period and noted the sweeping follow-up.
No formal action was taken other than staff's commitment to schedule street sweeping and monitor the impacted block; the matter was handled as a public-comment item and the commission moved on to the pilot-program agenda.
