Board debates one-year vs. rolling two-year administrator contracts amid paperwork confusion

Board members spent an extended portion of the meeting debating whether the district should return to one-year administrative contracts or retain rolling two-year renewals after staff reported unclear paperwork and missing printed contracts.

Business-office staff summarized confusing records: the board voted in June 2024 to move to two-year rolling contracts and again in June 2025, but printed contracts were not circulated and signatures were missing. "So the current contract says that all administrators are up June 30th...the paper part of it," a staff member said, describing a mismatch between board minutes and available signed documents. Several board members said they were unsure whether administrators would be out of contract on June 30 and recommended contacting the district's attorney to confirm legal status and safeguards.

Board member Steve framed the trade-offs: "I've been elsewhere and I've seen it...you have a principal that is in a two-year contract and does a very poor job gets moved back to the classroom and that your contract stays in place with pay," he said, noting both fiscal and fairness considerations. Other members pushed back that reverting to one-year contracts mid-cycle could be disruptive and that administrators should have adequate notice if contract lengths change.

No formal board vote was taken to change contract lengths at this meeting. Members agreed to seek legal clarification, consider whether to have administrators sign paper copies now to avoid a coverage gap, and to place clearer, explicit renewal language on a future (December) agenda if needed.
