At the June meeting commissioners prioritized local training and education to build capacity for safe cycling in Norwalk. Guest Christine Baggley, a League-certified instructor who joined the meeting by Zoom, said there is no expiration on LCI certification and offered to site-coordinate local classes if the commission can recruit enough students.
Baggley summarized logistics and capacity: "no, there is no time frame. There's no expiration date on your training," and later noted price points she observed for seminars: "The course is $550 early registration. Uh and then it jumps to 625 if you can't get there." Commission members discussed needing roughly four additional students to justify hosting a local seminar and considered using commission budget dollars in the new fiscal year (beginning in July) to cover instructor or registration costs.
Commissioners also discussed summer and fall safe-cycling classes in English and Spanish, a process for bilingual translations of outreach materials, and the education subcommittee's role in planning an October Walk/Bike/Roll to School event. Julia Green of the Norwalk Health Department said a part‑time staff member reviews translations when available and offered to help coordinate outreach. Commissioners agreed to continue recruitment and to revisit funding and scheduling at the next meeting so training can proceed if adequate enrollment is found.
Next steps: commissioners will canvass potential students, explore opening classes to local cycling groups to reach capacity, and evaluate whether the commission budget can cover seminar costs when the new fiscal year begins.
