The parks and recreation committee voted to advance a contract with the Aspen Institute’s Project Play to conduct an Akran state‑of‑play report designed to strengthen the city’s sports and wellness system for youth.
Director Lash introduced Deno Buckley Knight, who outlined a three‑phase approach: finalize the contract and strategy, conduct asset‑mapping and stakeholder interviews, and host a community event to release a strategy and activate a local sports and wellness action team. "We're looking at getting approval from you all as council to move forward with the partnership with the Aspen Institute to conduct the state of play report in Akran," Deno said.
Partners described how the work will support training, program quality, and grant readiness. Isaiah Young of Youth Success Summit said the study will identify training needs and program gaps; Dr. Ellen McWilliams said the report will help the city seek additional philanthropic and federal funding using data driven proposals.
Councilmembers pressed on price and local capacity. Councilman Garrick asked why the city could not do the work internally; Deno responded that a national leader like Aspen gives credibility and a cross‑community view that can leverage larger investments. Councilman Lombardo and others said they supported the contract, noting the potential for the study to unlock future funding.
The committee approved the item for consent; staff said they would proceed with a phased schedule and later return with specifics about metrics and mobilization of partner action teams.
Next steps: execute a contract with Project Play, begin asset mapping and stakeholder interviews, and hold a community release event after the report is complete.
