The Eastchester Union Free School District Board of Education on Tuesday amended the language of a previously adopted transportation proposition so that the version placed on the June 16 ballot will provide student transportation for children who live 1.0 mile or more from their assigned elementary school (grades K–5) and 1.5 miles or more for students in grades 6–12.
The board read a resolution amending its May 26, 2026 transportation resolution and citing New York State Education Law 3635 in the revised proposition. The chair said, “we are amending and have officially amended the original proposition to go with the least restrictive of those options, which will be on the ballot for the community to vote and decide.”
Board members moved and seconded the amendment and the chair declared the motion passed; no roll-call tally was recorded in the public record. The chair emphasized the board was amending the ballot language and not enacting a transportation policy that night, saying voters will decide on June 16.
The amended text as read to the meeting changes the district’s student transportation eligibility distances from the previously stated 2 miles (K–5) and 3 miles (6–12) to the lesser 1.0-mile and 1.5-mile thresholds referenced above, effective as stated in the proposition. The board noted a district budget hearing is scheduled for June 9 and that the revised proposition will appear on the June 16 special meeting ballot.
Supporters and opponents have differed sharply over the proposal in public comment: some residents urged the board to put the least-restrictive option on the ballot to preserve academic programs, while others questioned whether the district has fully studied traffic or downstream impacts. The board did not seek or announce implementation details that would follow a voter approval; such operational steps would be determined by district administration and subject to applicable law and policy.
