Bernalillo County’s clerk brought a mobile voting unit to International Fest in Albuquerque’s International District on the final day of early voting before the June 2 election, giving attendees the chance to register and cast ballots on site.
Clerk Kavanaaugh told the crowd the unit would be at the event until 6:00 p.m. and said, “If you're eligible, you can vote right here, right now.” She advised that people who are not registered can register and vote at the unit and encouraged voters to ask at the clerk’s table for assistance.
The clerk explained that New Mexico’s semi-open primary allows voters with no party affiliation to pick either the Democratic or Republican ballot without changing party registration. She also reminded voters that polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day and that absentee ballots must be in the clerk’s office by 7:00 p.m. on election day to be counted. Voters who are in line at 7 p.m. on election day will be allowed to vote, she said.
Clerk Kavanaaugh directed people with questions to the clerk’s table at the event and to the clerk’s official website for polling-location details and other election information. The mobile voting unit was staffed by Bernalillo County clerk’s office personnel who coordinated the unit’s presence with city partners at the festival.
The on-site voting offering was part of a broader effort by county and city officials to increase turnout and make voting more convenient during early voting for the primary.
