The Town of Surfside is installing two new trellises and adding nighttime lighting at the Surfside Community Center pool, town officials said, with work expected to finish in early June.
"We're looking to actually complete this project for you to enjoy in June, early June to be exact, so you can enjoy the sun and the summer," said Andre Eugen, the town's public works director, who described the project and its timeline.
The trellises are intended to provide shaded lounge areas for pool users; officials said the structures will be illuminated at night to improve evening use of the pool area. According to Eugen, public works crews excavated foundations for the trellis columns and the contractor will install the donated structures while maintaining pool access by cornering off a work zone.
"Our public works employees went ahead and dug the foundation that you'll see for the different columns for the company to install ... to actually enjoy," Eugen said, describing the site work completed so far.
Town officials thanked Ocean House for donating the trellises and said the town is handling installation and engineering oversight. They said an older north-side structure has been removed and will be replaced by the new shade installations.
The segment was presented as part of a town update called "Mondays with Mark." Officials asked residents to be patient during construction and said they will provide additional updates as the installation progresses. No formal votes or policy actions were announced during the segment.
