Surfside officials and members of the Corpora family unveiled a public-art sculpture called "Jimmy the Turtle," donated in memory of resident James Corpora. The short dedication at Town Hall featured remarks from the donor and artist, Danielle, and a statement from Vice Mayor Tina Paul.
Danielle, introduced by the program host as the sculpture's owner, artist and developer, said the work is intended to keep her father's memory in the community: "Unfortunately, 6 months ago to the day today, my father lost his life. We have been completely heartbroken and shattered. And Surfside is our home." She said her family hopes neighbors will "come take a look at it and admire it and enjoy it."
Vice Mayor Tina Paul said it was "an honor and privilege to um invite Jimmy the turtle to be part of Surfside and celebrate James Corpora, our dear beloved resident who many of you know." Paul said the sculpture will serve as a reminder of the "love and community" Corpora brought to Surfside.
Mark, the program host, provided installation details for visitors: "The first turtle you see it's right at the intersection of 93rd Street and Harding Avenue. You will see a dedication at the base of the turtle. Don't be confused. It does say Jimmy Holiday. And there's a reason for Jimmy Holiday because Jimmy's life was always a holiday."
Speakers thanked the Corpora family for the donation and invited residents to view the new addition to Surfside's Turtle Walk. The transcript records no formal votes or municipal actions tied to the dedication; the event was presented as a community memorial and public-art installation.
