Wilson County Commissioners on May 25 authorized staff to submit an application to the Texas Historical Commission under the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program and to sign a resolution supporting the grant request.
Mr. Thorne, who addressed the court as the project representative, described work that may be included if the grant is awarded: repair and reconditioning of front doors and seals, remediation of water-damaged interior wall coatings, and work on porticos. He told the court that the county has provided a preliminary estimate of about $750,000 and that the commission will determine award and percentage match; the state scoring matrix will determine the final award amount.
Commissioners asked follow-up questions about scope and contingency: whether the project could be scaled if the grant does not cover the full estimate and whether the county would be able to decline the grant if the award required an unaffordable local match. Mr. Thorne said the county could withdraw if the award terms were unacceptable.
The court voted to approve the resolution and authorized staff to proceed with the application process and with a future RFQ/RFP to obtain firm construction estimates if the grant moves forward.
