SIU trustees appoint Dr. Ian Martin as dean and provost of School of Medicine; approve routine personnel and fee items

Chancellor Lane presented a recommendation from a national search committee to appoint Dr. Ian Martin as the next dean and provost of the SIU School of Medicine, saying the search produced an internal and external pool of qualified candidates. "I am very pleased to bring forward the recommendation to appoint Dr. Ian Martin as the next dean and provost of the SIU School of Medicine," Chancellor Lane said.

Dr. Martin currently serves as assistant chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and interim senior associate dean for faculty affairs and leadership development at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The board approved the appointment by roll-call vote; the appointment is scheduled to begin Sept. 1, 2026.

The trustees also approved a short extension of the current dean's appointment (Dr. Cruz) to Sept. 1, 2026, which presenters said is intended to ensure continuity and a smooth leadership transition to the incoming dean. A trustee moved and the committee approved the extension; the secretary performed the roll-call vote which was recorded as passed.

Separately, the board approved a correction to the School of Aviation's primary flight course fee (AF 206B). The previously approved rate of $7,822.70 was corrected to $7,882.70. Presenters said the course is the hands-on in‑air instruction that counts toward earning a private pilot certificate; the roll-call vote to approve the corrected fee passed.

Trustees on record participating in roll-call votes included Curtis, Zena (as recorded in the transcript), Barnett, Williams and others. The board placed several routine items on the omnibus agenda and approved those items by roll call as well.

The board announced its next regularly scheduled meeting for July 9 at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield; a news conference will follow the meeting.
