The Spencer‑Owen Community Schools board on May 28 unanimously approved a series of facilities purchases, grants and personnel contracts including a $149,900 air‑conditioning replacement for Gosport Elementary School.
The superintendent presented the recommendation to replace a roughly 30‑year, irreparable HVAC unit with a 40‑ton package after obtaining three quotes and keeping the cost under the district's $150,000 threshold. "We should not put any more money into this, and would recommend that we just purchase a replacement in the amount of $149,900," the superintendent said during the meeting. The board voted 7‑0 to approve the purchase, which will be paid from remaining bond proceeds from the district's 2024 bond.
The board also accepted two grants: a $35,543 high‑ability program grant (notification received May 16) and a $4,400 Owen County Community Foundation grant to fund an Owen Valley High School military honor wall project. The superintendent noted the high‑ability award's exact amount during the presentation. Both grants were approved by voice vote, 7‑0.
On personnel and contract items, the board approved minimum instructor pay contracts for two junior ROTC instructors for the upcoming school year; the superintendent said the cost is split roughly 50/50 between the school corporation and the U.S. Air Force, per a Department of the Air Force memorandum provided to the district. The board also approved a contract with Elite Painting LLC to paint hallways and replace peeling wallpaper at Owen Valley Middle School, funded from remaining 2024 bond allocations for middle school and Spencer Elementary projects. All motions carried 7‑0.
Board members did not request amendments or additional conditions for the purchases and contracts during the meeting. The district will proceed with procurement and contract execution under the terms presented to the board. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for June 11 at Central Office at 7 p.m.
