The Hempstead Town Board on May 27 moved forward several local laws that would change parking and traffic rules in Baldwin, Island Park, Seaford, West Hempstead, Wantagh and parts of Leo Beach.
The board opened public hearings for a proposed local law to limit parking near Baldwin and Island Park, a separate law addressing parking and standing prohibitions in Baldwin, Seaford and West Hempstead, and another to add stop signs on certain arterial approaches. Traffic staff said a proposed 7 a.m.–7 p.m. time restriction is being considered in front of 2360 Harrison Avenue to improve sight distance and driveway egress. For a T-intersection at Harrison Avenue and Bixby Drive staff said they reviewed 10 years of accident records from Nassau County and noted that New York state law requires defining right-of-way at a T intersection when no stop controls exist.
Why it matters: the measures target pedestrian and driveway safety and aim to standardize parking restrictions in neighborhoods that residents and staff said face congestion and sight-line issues.
Board action and votes: after public comment and brief questions from board members the motions to close hearings and consider the items passed on roll calls. The board also moved the administrative calendar (items 7–44) as a block, which included item 25: a waiver of permit fees for the Point Lookout Shootout for Soldiers lacrosse fundraiser July 8–9 designed to raise money for veterans organizations.
Public comments focused on accessibility and notice: residents asked how accident statistics and supporting documents are published and whether stop signs would be lighted (staff answered no for the current proposals). One public speaker raised ADA parking and how residents learn about the process for handicap signs; staff said residents must apply and show a legal handicap permit for on-street markings.
What’s next: the items advanced per the board’s motions and will follow the town’s ordinance process; additional technical details such as exact sign locations, start times, and any attachments to the legal text were discussed as follow-ups by staff.
