Council members were told April 22 that Kenton County Planning & Development Services (PDS) will present to the city on May 13 to explain policy options and zoning implications for medical cannabis businesses.
The mayor asked council members to read a lengthy memorandum from Director Ready and to prepare questions for the May 13 meeting. The packet and staff comments framed the city’s role as focused on the business/zoning side — the city must decide whether to permit, prohibit or put the issue to a vote, and if permitted then determine appropriate zoning districts and distance provisions. Council members raised questions about whether cultivation would occur within city zones and about how to proceed (ordinance vs. placement on a ballot) under state law.
Officials emphasized the presentation is intended to inform future policy decisions rather than adopt rules on April 22. Director Ready and Planning & Development staff are expected to provide zoning guidance and answer council questions at the May meeting.
Why it matters: Decisions about allowing medical cannabis businesses require zoning changes, possible ordinance language or ballot questions and can affect where commercial cannabis retailers could locate within the city. Council signaled the item will receive detailed review at the May 13 meeting.
