Council approves 'Cactus Blossom' sculpture for San Pablo Phase 2 roundabout

The Palm Desert City Council voted unanimously on May 14 to install Gordon Huther’s public art proposal, titled "Cactus Blossom," at the San Pablo Phase 2 roundabout at the College of the Desert entrance.

Erica Jimenez, Public Works staff, told the council the city received 214 artist submissions, shortlisted five finalists and advanced two for community review; the community preference favored Huther’s proposal, which received about 74.5% of survey responses. Jimenez said staff recommended the polished stainless steel sphere option for visibility and lower long‑term maintenance.

Council members discussed scale, nighttime lighting and the site suitability of both finalists. Because the committee scores between the top two entries had been very close, staff also asked whether council wanted staff to study a second installation at the larger East Dinosaur Drive roundabout. Council members agreed the stainless steel sphere is the more maintenance‑friendly option and supported the cultural arts committee’s recommendation.

The council approved the staff recommendation 5‑0. No formal motion to commit to a second installation was approved tonight; staff will return with additional analysis and a funding plan if the council wants to pursue that site later.

What’s next: staff will notify the selected artist to proceed with fabrication and will return with any additional recommendations for the Dinosaur Drive site if the council directs further study.
