Superintendent Dr. Wright publicly apologized at the Little Rock School District board meeting on May 28 after multiple parents reported being unable to attend Central High School's graduation ceremony.
Several family members described arriving on time and being denied entry, forced to watch their children's graduation on YouTube from outside the venue. Benny Williams told the board: "I had to hold my daughter up, both of us in tears through the whole night," and urged the district to accept accountability.
Dr. Wright said he had personally reached out to affected families and publicly "took full responsibility and accountability for what happened with the graduation ceremonies" and promised corrective steps to ensure such an incident does not recur.
What the district will do
The superintendent said he will implement procedural and operational changes for future graduations, including improved crowd and ticket management, clearer communications to traveling families, and coordination with public safety partners. He also committed to direct outreach to families affected by the Central ceremony and to report back to the board on corrective measures.
Board response and community tone
Board members expressed regret and offered apologies on their own behalf; several asked staff to ensure better planning and to include parents in operational checks before large events. Several members urged the administration to approach future ceremonies as high-stakes customer-service events that require margin for error and clear family communication.
Ending
Dr. Wright said the district "is going to put some things in place to make sure that that won't ever ever ever happen again," and the board directed the superintendent to follow up with a summary of corrective actions and family outreach steps.
