A merger focus team released a video outlining six staff-centered recommendations intended to guide a potential consolidation of the Canajoharie and Fort Plain school districts.
The presenter said the proposals aim to support professional development, onboarding and culture-building across a new district while minimizing disruption for students and staff. "Implementing a whole district collaborative model of shared decision-making" is offered as the first recommendation for governance during transition, the presenter said.
The video recommends keeping existing teaching structures in each elementary school during the early stages of transition "to maintain stability," followed by a push to "cultivate a data-driven school culture" that would prioritize professional learning, new-teacher orientation and regular horizontal and vertical team meetings to align instructional practice and improve student outcomes.
On integration planning, the team urged dedicated collaborative time, including a summer pre-launch to finalize procedures and incorporate social and emotional learning (SEL) and restorative practices into core routines.
For staffing, the presenter proposed a balanced model that guarantees baseline support personnel in every school and uses student-population data to allocate additional resources to higher-need schools. "Strategic deployment based on student population data" is cited as the mechanism to identify schools with greater needs.
The sixth recommendation calls for establishing a district-sponsored early childhood center intended both as a cornerstone service for families and as a tool to attract and retain staff.
The presenter framed these items as options for planning rather than final decisions: "In conclusion, these recommendations are a starting point for ideas should the merger take place." The video does not record formal votes, implementation timelines, or budget figures for any of the recommendations.
