Votes at a glance: Granite Falls board adopts several policies, approves WIAA resolution

The Granite Falls School Board on May 27 approved a slate of policy actions and a resolution in a meeting that followed awards and reports.

What the board approved: the board accepted second readings and adopted the following items by motion and voice vote — policy 2140 (comprehensive school counseling program), policy 2023 (digital citizenship), policy 1105 (electoral system) and policy 1731 (board member expenses). The board also adopted Resolution 252614 to continue participation in the WIAA interscholastic association.

The board handled several first-reading items as well: it adopted the first reading of policy 2022 (electronic resources) with a board amendment to add personally identifying information (PII) language for the second reading; it adopted the first reading of policy 5406 (leave sharing) with clarified wording about procedures; and it removed policy 2320 (field trips/excursions) from today’s agenda so staff can revise the draft to add parent/guardian permission and driver verification language.

Why it matters: the counseling and digital-citizenship policies set program and classroom-level expectations; the electoral-system policy frames how boundary/redistricting work will be handled as the community grows; the leave-sharing policy decision limits potential unbudgeted liabilities by keeping donations within bargaining units; and the WIAA resolution preserves students’ ability to continue interscholastic competition under the association’s rules.

Voting and procedure notes: nearly all roll-call and voice votes were conducted by motion and the board registered affirmative responses to approve the measures; many motions were made and seconded without recorded dissent. When a policy required further work — notably field trips — the board removed it from the agenda and directed staff to return a revised draft.

Next steps: staff will revise policy 2320 to add specified parental-permission language and driver background checks; policy 2022 will return for a second reading with added PII protections; leave-sharing procedures will be finalized and brought back for the board’s next consideration.
