The Transylvania County Schools bond subcommittee received an update on GMP1 summer work and short‑term logistics from Beecher Allison, the district's education capital project manager.
Allison said the contractor will begin the first phase of summer work on June 8 and that staff have coordinated site logistics (badges, keys, and daily communication) to help the construction team integrate smoothly with school operations. "Come June 8th, which is their start date for the first phase of work that's scheduled to happen this summer," Allison said, and added: "Everything to date has been on schedule and under budget for the original scopes of work." The sites named for summer work included Rosman Elementary School, Brevard Middle School and Brevard High School.
Planned summer activities described by staff include: CMU wall and stairstep crack remediation at Rosman Elementary, roofing work focused on specific wings and back entrances at Brevard High this summer (with band, auditorium and drama wing roofs slated for the fall), replacement of flat TPO roofs at Brevard Middle School, and exterior brick and flashing repairs at campus sites. Allison said some temporary shoring and other early GMP1 work has already been completed (for example at an older gym), and that design and construction teams are coordinating closely with school staff to enhance on‑site safety.
Allison noted that additional work discovered when full drawings became available — notably added air‑handling units — increased some line items, particularly at Rosman High School. He said the original scope prepared by Axius remained under budget, but that the additions identified post‑assessment led to a net increase to the program; staff reported project savings that offset roughly $1.2 million of the new costs.
The subcommittee approved Allison's presentation by voice vote and asked staff to provide per‑school air‑handler counts and cost breakdowns following the meeting. Staff said they will continue weekly coordination with Transylvania County Schools staff through the summer and will return with more detailed cost breakdowns as requested.
Next steps: summer GMP1 work begins when students are released and on‑site coordination continues through the summer. Staff will provide the requested per‑school HVAC counts and costs and will keep the committee updated on any changes that affect the approved scope or timeline.
