U.N. mourns former peacekeeping adviser Lt. Gen. Chicadibia Isak Obiakor

The United Nations announced the passing of Lieutenant General Chicadibia Isak Obiakor, a former U.N. military adviser for peacekeeping operations and a distinguished Nigerian military officer.

In Friday's briefing, the U.N. spokesperson recalled that General Obiakor served as force commander of the U.N. mission in Liberia and later became the first African national to serve as military adviser for peacekeeping operations at U.N. Headquarters in New York. After retiring from active military service, the spokesperson said, General Obiakor continued to support U.N. work by leading boards of inquiry on conflicts in South Sudan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The U.N. extended condolences to his family, colleagues and the government of Nigeria.
