Providence School Board members used a May 27 special meeting to discuss the planned return of the Providence Public School District to local control and to outline next steps ahead of the July 1 transition.
A board member who did not state their name in the transcript described joining the board during state intervention and said their life was transformed by education: "As someone who came to Providence as a refugee after spending 15 years in the refugee camp, education changed my life," the board member said, adding that the board and community deserve local leadership that listens to students and families.
Chairman Migo said the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education has begun a transition plan and "has voted to return the schools back to local control by July 1st of this year." He thanked the commissioner and the superintendent for their work during the intervention and said the board has met many of the conditions set last year. The chairman said the board will hold a retreat and meet July 1 to further discuss implementation tasks and celebrate the return to local governance.
Board members emphasized continuity: several said committees continued policy, budget and facility oversight work during the intervention and that much of the ongoing work will continue under local governance. Members acknowledged remaining tasks the board must complete before July 1 and scheduled a retreat to develop more detailed action steps.
No vote was required on item 3.2; the chair characterized the session as a discussion of next steps rather than a formal action. The board then moved to an executive session to consult with legal counsel on personnel and litigation matters.
The board s next procedural step is a retreat and a July 1 board meeting to receive status updates and plan immediate implementation actions.
