The Brick Township Board of Education on May 20 celebrated its building-level Governor’s Educator of the Year winners and named Darren St. Gene of Brick Township High School as the district’s Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Anderson, identified in the meeting as director of curriculum and instruction, opened the presentation with a video tribute and thanked staff who organized the program. The board presented awards to dozens of teachers and educational service professionals from Herbertsville Early Childhood Development Center through Brick Memorial High School; announcements included Brittany Flickinger, Donna Miller, Tammy Helmstead, Jessica Markland, Jenna Enriquez and many others across the district.
Darren St. Gene, introduced as the district winner, told the audience he was honored and framed teaching as ‘‘not about perfection’’ but about ‘‘showing up’’ and believing in students. He said confidence is forged by challenge and by people who ‘‘believe in them before they fully believe in themselves,’’ remarks the board and the room received with applause.
The school leaders emphasized that the awards reflect the district’s stated mission of student-centered, teacher-led, community-connected instruction and showcased examples of student projects, contests and extracurricular achievements presented earlier in the meeting.
In addition to the awards, administrators noted recent grants meant to support instruction: the district’s preliminary plan was accepted for a $320,000 high-impact tutoring grant to provide elementary-level tutoring, and a $2,000 sustainability grant was awarded to Brick High School. The superintendent said the tutoring funds are expected to support targeted interventions; the board indicated program details and implementation timing would be finalized in coming weeks.
The board concluded the presentation portion of the meeting with group photographs and returned awardees to their seats before moving to routine business.
