A community member urged the Bedford City Board of Education on May 29 to take concrete action on what they described as excessive staff absenteeism that has affected instruction and the district's finances.
In public comment, the speaker cited multiple days recently when the district reportedly was 'down a 100 plus people, 90 some people, 124 staff' and said the absences have 'a financial burden' because the district must bring in substitute teachers and reassign staff. The commenter asked the board and district to work with 'DDA representation as well as, OPSE' and requested a clear, nonpunitive accountability plan to protect instruction and school safety.
The superintendent, Tom Evans, thanked staff who covered duties during shortages, describing the response as 'all hands on deck' and praising the staff who stepped in to keep schools open. The board did not record a formal policy vote responding to the request during the meeting; one personnel item on the agenda (a proposed termination) was tabled for further discussion and other personnel actions proceeded to votes.
The comment drew attention to operational stresses the board faces in staffing schools and was entered into the record before superintendent remarks and the subsequent votes on personnel items. The board announced it would enter executive session and adjourn for the evening without additional public votes.
