Vienna — The City Council voted unanimously to authorize a $35,000 donation to Jackson Middle School for construction of a multisport facility, but members amended the resolution to make the donation contingent on the building phase being fully funded.
Project proponents, led by Adam Jones, described plans for an approximately 2,000‑square‑foot addition to house a dedicated wrestling facility, locker rooms and concessions. Jones, who identified himself as a city police officer and coach, said private donations have already brought the building close to its quoted cost and that the city's contribution would be disbursed only after the project secures the remainder of required funds.
"As of right now, our plan would be to break ground as soon as we get permission from Wood County Schools on June 9," Jones said, adding the group had about $65,000 raised toward the quoted $93,000 building shell and aimed to reach the larger goal for interior work.
Council members commended the project as serving hundreds of youth and recommended the donation be explicitly contingent on the building's funding being secured. The council added language clarifying the donation would be payable only when the building construction was fully funded and approved by Jackson Middle School and the Wood County Board of Education; the amended resolution passed unanimously.
What happens next: Project leaders expect Wood County Schools consideration at a June 9 meeting; the city will execute documents and release funds if the required project funding thresholds are met.
