Council Member Dan Bell used his council report to press for renewed focus on pedestrian safety on Main Street after a recent, serious crash near a side crosswalk.
Bell said merchants have voiced long‑running worry about speeding and crosswalk safety and asked that the traffic safety committee reconvene to examine data for two specific corridors—between 400 North and 500 South on Main Street, and between 300 South and 300 North on Main Street—and to consider near‑term, proactive measures to reduce risk while staff compile more records. "Let's get the band back together on the traffic safety committee," Bell said, asking staff to gather crash statistics for the identified stretches and to think about mitigations that might prevent future tragedies.
Mayor Bradshaw and other council members expressed support for a data‑driven approach and agreed the request was appropriate. No formal motion or vote was taken; the item was presented as a council direction request for staff to organize the committee and collect the specified data.
If staff follow through, the committee will return recommended options to the council for any formal changes to crosswalks, speed enforcement, or street design.
