Chris Murket, city engineer for South Salt Lake, briefed the TAC on May 27 about the city's downtown redevelopment area between 2100 South and I-80 and bounded by State Street and I-15. He said the area is emphasized in multiple plans, including station-area and mobility plans, and includes both a TRAX station and the S-line.
Murket described the Life on State project, which will realign and shorten the Parley's Trail crossing at State Street, add a bulb-out on the west side of State Street and begin construction soon with expected completion by the end of the year. He said the city will use soil cells to ensure street trees have adequate soil volume to thrive as part of the beautification effort.
He also said the city will close an eastbound lane on Central Point Place in coordination with adjacent private development to create a pedestrian plaza and that Parley's Trail gaps on Central Point Place will be addressed concurrently. Murket noted the 300 West bikeway is proposed for CMAC this round and would connect Parley's Trail to Central Point station and approach Salt Lake City's 300 West facilities.
Murket listed redevelopment incentives available to private developers in the area, including LIHTC, opportunity-zone provisions, high-density zoning, local option sales tax options, the Utah Trail Network program and a recent Utah Affordable Housing Infrastructure grant to help fund utility upgrades for new development.
