Salt Lake City ' The Wasatch Front Regional Council voted May 28 to add roughly $65.6 million in state and federal funds to the draft 2027'2032 Transportation Improvement Program, approving 39 projects recommended by TransCom and staff.
The projects cover multiple funding programs: Surface Transportation Program (STP), Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAC), Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), and Carbon Reduction Program (CRP). Ben Witridge, WFRC staff, said the additions reflect technical prioritization and local need, citing the region's long list of project requests compared with available funds.
Examples: Drew Bay Road (Twilla area) is a reconstruction and shoulder-widening project that received Community Project Funding (CPF) and a local match for a total cost of about $6.24 million. A Salt Lake City project to enhance the 200 South transit lane (600 West to University Street) was presented with a $2.5 million total cost (including $2 million CPF). A Sandy pedestrian-safety project near the amphitheater was revised after field review from a hawk signal to an underpass; estimated construction cost is $5.4 million and $2 million in CMAC funds were recommended for the project.
Why it matters: WFRC programs federal formula funds and regionally apportioned programs to local projects. The funding additions will be included in a draft TIP released for public review and comment in July and then returned to the council for final approval.
Process note: Staff solicited letters of intent in fall 2025, evaluated concept reports and performed field reviews. The TransCom technical committee and UDOT/UTA partners recommended projects based on eligibility, data-driven scoring and professional considerations.
Next steps: Staff will compile the approved project list into a draft TIP, publish it for public review in July 2026, and return to the council for final action following the public comment period.
