Frank Hbert, the high school robotics coach, presented the Portage High robotics season to the board on May 26, describing a program rebound after a major rebuild and notable competitive success.
Hbert said the team rebuilt its robot, traveled to district and regional events—winning matches and earning selection to elimination finals—and received a judges' recognition described in the meeting as a rising all‑star award. The team’s roster expanded from about 14 students last year to roughly 30 this year. “We were selected to be part of the elimination finals and won our first couple matches and the kids had a blast,” Hbert said.
Hbert also announced a $3,000 gift from Ursa Labs and the education foundation to help the team purchase a 4x4 CNC routing table for cutting polycarbonate and light metals, which Hbert said will allow students to learn machining, CAD/CAM and manufacturing skills. The coach emphasized the program's focus on student skill development, inclusion of female students in media and fabrication roles, and plans to collaborate with local VEX programs.
The board congratulated Hbert and the students and expressed appreciation for volunteers and sponsors who support the robotics program.
