The Platteville Common Council voted unanimously May 26 to adopt the Platteville Community Comprehensive Plan 2026'2036, accepting the Plan Commission's recommendation and removing the first table on page 40 as a minor edit.
Joe, speaking for staff, presented the plan and said there had been no new public comments or suggested edits since the previous meeting. Council members focused on implementation mechanics, particularly how the plan will align with capital planning and asset management: councilors emphasized the need to map asset lifespans so the city can forecast maintenance and replacement costs. Staff described a 10-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) objective within the strategic plan and noted work by city staff and university students on a maintenance-management system to catalog assets and replacement timing.
Resident Jim Schneller urged council to adopt a medium-density designation near the school, arguing higher-density housing near schools can reduce traffic and support walkability. The council then moved to approve the plan (motion to approve with the table removed); the motion passed 7-0 with Cop, McFall, Doss, Gates, Wisnap, Parrot and Badger voting yes.
What happens next: Staff will coordinate the plan's implementation with department champions and incorporate CIP and maintenance-management outputs into future budget and project planning. The plan will return for final action-related scheduling and any clarifications requested by council.
