LCC reiterates travel reimbursement restrictions for legislators during election years

Tom Day reminded the council of LCC Policy 34 covering out-of-state travel reimbursement during election years: legislators who have publicly stated they are not running for reelection, or who are defeated in a primary or general election and are not chairs/co-chairs/vice chairs of recognized associations, may not receive reimbursement for out-of-state travel. The prohibition includes registration and conference fees (for examples, NCSL, ALEC and CSG).

The reminder was offered as an administrative clarification amid questions from members about whether registration fees and conference costs were included in the restriction. Day confirmed the policy covers those fees and that LCC members, who serve in legislative leadership, remain eligible for reimbursement when traveling for recognized legislative business per Policy 4.

Next steps: staff will continue to apply Policy 34 in election years and answer member questions as they arise.
