Cindy Burnham, administrator at Hitchcock Road Animal Services, said the shelter will participate in California Adopt a Pet Day on Saturday, June 6, when adoption fees at participating shelters are sponsored and waived statewide.
Burnham said the statewide effort aims to place 5,000 animals and involves more than 150 shelters, with sponsorship from groups including a San Francisco SPCA affiliate and the ASPCA. Locally, Hitchcock Road will waive adoption fees and provide free dog licenses for adoptive owners in the shelter’s licensing jurisdiction.
The shelter plans on-site food vendors, a photo booth for adopters, and a counseling process for prospective adopters. Burnham said the shelter has refined its workflow to handle high turnout while keeping counseling in place so animals are matched carefully to homes. “We adopted out over 50 animals the last two events each day,” she said, describing the shelter’s prior event experience.
Burnham also reiterated that adopted animals will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before they leave the shelter. She invited interested residents to check Hitchcock Road Animal Services’ website and social media for updates on available animals and event details.
Next steps: Hitchcock Road will post updates on social media and its website as animals become available; the shelter encouraged early planning and questions from prospective adopters.
