Marion County commissioners voted to accept a $51,578.19 grant from the Office of Judicial Administration to fund acoustic wall treatments and audiovisual upgrades in the historic Marion County Courthouse courtroom.
A county staff member told commissioners the project will include acoustic wall treatment chosen to complement the room's historic architecture, a 6,500‑lumen Epson laser projector, three additional non‑security video cameras, and a video switcher with a USB bridge and multi‑viewer. The staff estimate listed technology costs at $29,998.19; the full grant award was stated as $51,578.19.
The staff member said the grant covers the wall treatment and the listed technology improvements and that any electrical work or other excluded items would not be included in the grant. "These improvements shall be funded by the grant awarded to the 8th Judicial District by the Office of Judicial Administration in the amount of $51,578.19, with any overruns be funded from the Marion County District Court budget or other funds controlled by the 8th Judicial District," a commissioner moved during the meeting.
Commissioners seconded the motion and approved it by voice vote. The motion and approval authorized the court project to proceed and instructed staff to utilize the grant rather than county budget funds, with the understanding that district court or 8th Judicial District funds would cover overruns if necessary.
The staff presentation noted the project is intended to address longstanding audio problems for both in‑person attendees and virtual participants in the high‑ceiling historic courtroom; staff also said the district court has coordinated bids and applied for the OJA grant and must accept the award by a June 4 deadline.
The commission did not record a roll‑call vote with names on the record; the motion passed by voice vote. The county staff said scheduling and project logistics will be coordinated primarily by court personnel in consultation with county facility and technical staff.
