Commission recommends rezoning to allow crematorium at Love Funeral Homes site

The Dalton-Whitfield Planning Commission recommended rezoning 1402 North Thornton Avenue from neighborhood commercial (C1) to general commercial (C2) to allow Love Funeral Homes to add a crematorium.

Staff said the funeral home is an existing use that is not conforming in C1 and that expanding to include cremation services requires a C2 designation; surrounding parcels are C2 as part of the Hamilton Medical Center area. "Based on the surrounding zoning... we find no issue with the comprehensive plan," staff said.

Lindsay Jenkins, speaking for the petitioner, said the applicant intends to use the existing structure and had no additional comments. No opposition speakers were recorded and the commission voted to recommend approval; staff will forward the recommendation to city decision-makers for final action.
