Barbara Turner, director for magnet programs, presented an overview of Richland 2’s magnet portfolio at the May 26 work session, describing the district’s five pillars for magnet quality and a three‑tier evaluation system. Turner said Forest Lake NASA Explorer School received Magnet Schools of America’s 2026 Top Elementary Magnet School of Excellence and noted 36 nationally certified magnet programs and 101 merit awards of excellence and distinction.
Turner presented student-outcome data showing gains in elementary ELA and math and strong performance by magnet students at the middle- and high‑school levels. She described professional development and national conference participation as key supports and said magnet programs serve as learning labs for the district.
Trustees asked about capacity and waitlists for popular programs and whether expansion is possible; Turner and Dr. Moore said expansion is considered but depends on district finances. Trustees also raised concerns about occasional inconsistency in new magnet teachers’ ability to deliver theme‑driven instruction; Turner said the department will implement a magnet walkthrough and targeted coaching to support teachers and improve program fidelity.
