The Riley County Commission on May 28 approved a slate of routine county business, including contracts, permits, capital improvements amendments and personnel actions.
Commissioners approved an agreement for professional services with Schwab Eton PA for the Green Landauk Road project and a highway-use permit application for Larson Construction. The board also approved a resolution voiding outstanding checks issued prior to April 30, 2024.
During discussion of the capital improvement program, staff explained that increases in the space-needs study and IT/GIS line items reflected updated cost estimates; the board approved amendments for a health department space-needs study, IT/GIS remodel and HVAC replacement projects for public works facilities. Commissioners questioned whether the generator was included in the IT estimate; staff clarified it is part of the project authorization package.
The commission approved a package of personnel actions that included separations (volunteer firefighter and election worker), promotions and hires (a full-time paramedic, on-call juvenile intake officers, an intern at the health department) and the refilling of a residential appraiser I position in the appraiser’s office. Megan Lewis, director of community corrections, had earlier briefed the board on rising juvenile and adult intakes and program statistics.
The board also approved payroll and accounts-payable for May 29, 2026, and accepted minutes from the May 21, 2026 meeting by voice vote. Planning staff requested and the commission approved a letter of support authorizing Riley County’s participation in a Flint Hills Regional Council multi-jurisdictional Safe Streets and Roads for All planning and demonstration grant application; the requested grant amount is $1,700,000 and requires state matching from Build Kansas funds, with no county cash ask.
All motions were approved by voice vote and recorded in the meeting minutes. Commissioners said staff would circulate signed documents and follow up on implementation items such as the CIP study work and the appraiser refill.
