Commission hears proposal to add aviation maintenance curriculum to Indian River County high schools

Commissioner Philip Canal read a prepared statement at the Jan. 23 meeting proposing an Aviation Maintenance curriculum for Indian River County high schools. Canal said the program would introduce young people to aviation careers and could lead to employment with local employers, including aircraft manufacturers and maintenance providers.

Commissioner Carole Jean Jordan said she supports the concept, noting the program would be time‑consuming to create but could meet a local need and lead students into well‑paying jobs. Canal said he may need support from both the Vero Beach City Council and the Indian River County School Board to advance the idea through county‑level education channels.

The commission did not adopt any formal resolution or pledge funding; members indicated general support and said they would discuss the proposal as Canal advances the idea and seeks partners.
