Abigail “Abby” Lorenz, director of public engagement for Atkins Arboretum, told the Caroline County Board of License Commissioners the organization will hold two summer events and limit alcohol sales to the visitor-center footprint.
Lorenz said the Forest Music event on June 11, 2026, is expected to draw about 300 people and the Summer Solstice member-appreciation event on June 21 about 200. She said alcohol will be sold by TIP-certified staff, wristbands will be used to mark customers of legal age, and volunteers will monitor the site. Lorenz also said Atkins received a grant to provide free memberships to low-income Caroline County residents to increase community engagement.
Commissioners asked whether beer as well as wine would be served and probed enforcement measures; applicants confirmed beer will be available for the Summer Solstice social and reiterated staff certification and wristband checks. Commissioners noted they had no records of previous problems at Atkins events.
Commissioner (Speaker 4) moved to approve the temporary license for the Forest Music event and the motion was seconded; the board voiced approval. Commissioner (Speaker 4) subsequently moved to approve the Summer Solstice social, the motion was seconded, and the board approved that application as well. The transcript does not show a numeric vote tally.
Board staff said they will follow up when licenses are prepared and issued.
