Staff to present school-zone speed detection ordinance for commission review

City staff said the Commission will consider an ordinance to establish speed detection systems to enforce school-zone speed limits.

Tanya Sterling, assistant to the City Manager, said the ordinance creates Article 5 of Chapter 14, entitled Speed Detection Systems, and would authorize the city to implement school-zone speed detection programs in accordance with Florida law. "Florida law requires the determination that the identified school zones establishes a heightened safety risk to be presented at a public hearing," Sterling said, and she said staff will provide a detailed presentation at the Commission meeting the next day.

Staff did not take a vote during the workshop; the ordinance was listed on the agenda for first reading at the Commission meeting.
