Madison County Clerk Mike Kelle warned drivers that some commercial driver’s license endorsements and restrictions may be missing after New York State moved historic DMV records into a new system.
"When they took the historic data of DMV license information from 90 different databases ... some of those threads did not come through as cleanly as they should have," Kelle said, describing the state migration as the source of the problem. He said the discrepancy shows up when a driver receives a license that lacks a previously earned endorsement or carries a missing restriction.
Kelle said the state is aware of the issue and the county has a procedure to restore privileges or correct restrictions when the printed license does not match the system record. "If that happens to you, please contact our office, come into the office," he said.
He urged professional drivers in particular to verify that what is printed on their license matches their official record. Kelle advised anyone obtaining a duplicate or renewing a CDL "after Feb. 19" to double-check endorsements and restrictions with a DMV cashier during the transaction so they are not unexpectedly missing and to avoid potential problems on the road.
Kelle closed by asking listeners to share the information with family or colleagues who hold CDLs. "If you or someone you love is a professional commercial driver or you have a CDL, please share this out with them so that they can avoid falling into the cracks in New York State DMV system," he said.
