A WMSC staff member told attendees that "Every day, Metro Rail moves thousands of people across our region," and that the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission is focused on strengthening that system's safety.
At the commission's April 14 public meeting, WMSC staff described a series of targeted inspections conducted in April at Metro Rail yards, including so-called "car wash" inspections aimed at confirming that appropriate safety measures are in place. The staff said those checks examined processes, procedures, facilities and mechanisms and found that Metro has committed through a corrective action plan to install alarm systems intended to enhance worker protection.
The presentation also featured the WMSC's first strategic plan, which the staff described as setting objectives to strengthen Metro Rail safety across operations. According to the staff, the strategic plan lays out priorities for inspection focus and improvements the commission expects Metro to pursue.
The meeting marked leadership transitions at the agency. The staff reported that Chris Hart's most recent term as WMSC chair ended in March; the staff described Hart as the commission's inaugural chair who played an integral role in establishing the WMSC as an independent safety agency. The staff also announced that David Meyer, the inaugural CEO of the WMSC, has announced his departure effective June 1.
No formal votes or motions were reported in the presentation, and the staff framed the session as an informational update on inspections, the strategic plan and leadership changes. The commission emphasized continuity of mission, stating it will continue advancing Metro Rail safety as staff and commissioners implement the strategic plan and follow up on corrective actions.
The WMSC scheduled no further specific public actions in the presentation; the staff indicated follow-up will include oversight of the corrective action plan and implementation of strategic-plan objectives.
