Community prom giveaway at Bronxboro Hall supplies free dresses, suits to class of 2026

Bronxboro Hall filled with donated gowns, tuxedos and volunteers at a community prom giveaway aimed at helping students in the class of 2026 attend prom without the usual expense. Multiple local groups and businesses provided free dresses, tuxedos, haircuts, accessories and makeup services to students and families at the event.

Organizers and donors highlighted both the economic and environmental benefits of the drive. A volunteer for the giveaway said organizers try to keep donated clothing in circulation: "I think a lot of these dresses ... would probably end up in a landfill or people's closets for years. And I like to think that we're also doing a favor for the environment by reusing these dresses," according to the transcript.

The reporter said nonprofit Becca's Closet donated more than 500 dresses this year. Longtime donor Lady Pamela Dawson was named in the transcript as having donated dresses for 23 years. An event organizer described the program's growth from a small gown giveaway to a larger Bronx event and said it eases the financial burden of graduation season for many families: "We started a small prom gown giveaway and then it escalated ... it's not just about giving tuxedos away or giving dresses away, but it's really about impacting their lives," the organizer said.

Parents and students at the site said the giveaway made a tangible difference. One parent said, "I appreciate this event because it helps out a lot for single parents ... you come here, you feel welcome." A senior student said, "Like, it's my first prom ever and it's my senior prom ... I'm very excited and I want to feel good about it, too. It helps because some stores really can't afford prom and or prom suits in general."

Organizers framed the giveaway as recognition for graduates heading to a range of next steps, from middle and high school to college, careers, the military and trade schools.
