The Town Commission recognized foster care awareness and local nonprofit Ways for Life during the May 21 meeting and invited representatives to speak.
Mayor Allison Dennington read proclamations designating May as National Foster Care Month and recognizing Ways for Life for wraparound services for youth aging out of foster care. Mary Grace West, director of community connections for the Brevard County Foster and Adoptive Parents Association (BCFAPA), and a Ways for Life representative described peer support, housing and mentoring programs and thanked the town for the recognition.
"We are here to support families who are fostering children in our own neighborhoods," Mary Grace West said.
The meeting also featured presentations by Girl Scouts Troops 231 and 212. Troop 231 requested permission to hold a pet‑supply drive at the town Back to School Bash (Aug. 7, 6–8 p.m.) and to post promotional posters; Troop 212 described made cleanup buckets they want to place around town. Commissioners and the manager indicated the manager could approve the logistics; the commission encouraged volunteers and staff to coordinate with the manager’s office.
Commissioners asked staff to coordinate permissions, calendar availability and permitting details; the manager said event and posting logistics could be handled administratively and asked the troop leaders to follow up with staff.
The commission also invited volunteers and youth groups to take photos with the proclamation and encouraged resident participation in the August drive and other volunteer efforts.
