Dana McCloy, speaking during the public-comment period, told the Board of Education she does not feel her child is safe at school and outlined specific safety concerns the district should address.
McCloy said large extracurricular groups lack adequate adult supervision — describing a music teacher supervising more than 110 students in marching-band activities — and said that next year that number could exceed 120. She also reported a driver-education teacher had been arrested for DUI and raised a pattern of student vaping in classrooms and bathrooms.
She said a separate, dangerous student behavior tied to a social-media "choking" trend occurred during a gym class and required one child to go to the emergency room. “Literally seeing a video where your child turns blue and passes out is nothing any parent should ever have to witness,” McCloy said.
McCloy asked the board to improve supervision and safety protocols and said when she raised concerns previously she was escorted to a vestibule and locked out of the school during follow-up interactions.
Why it matters: Safety, supervision and staff conduct are core responsibilities of district administration and can trigger policy changes, staffing adjustments or further investigation. McCloy requested concrete follow-up by the board and administration.
What the board said: The public portion of the transcript records McCloy's concerns and the administration agreed to follow up; the meeting later moved into executive session on personnel matters at the end of the public meeting.
