The City Council on Friday recognized long‑running volunteer work by the L.A. River Walkers and Watchers and highlighted a partnership with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) that supports ranger patrols, maintenance and community outreach along the river’s headwaters.
Councilmember Bob Blumenfield recounted the group’s grassroots start and credited volunteers and partner agencies—MRCA, Los Angeles Conservation Corps and local ROTC units—with transforming neglected stretches of the bike path into safer, more welcoming public space. “This partnership has made a real difference,” Blumenfield said, describing coordinated cleanup efforts and ranger patrols that improved safety and access.
Community founders and volunteers told the council they began cleaning the path after seeing chronic blight, illegal dumping and safety concerns. An MRCA deputy chief ranger said the partnership provides a model for other neighborhoods seeking sustained stewardship and improved interagency coordination.
Council presentations concluded with certificates and remarks urging residents to continue volunteering and supporting river restoration efforts. No legislative action was taken during the presentation.
