The Landmarks Commission voted May 20 to approve two Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior work at contributing properties in the Astor Historic District and announced an RFP for an Astor Park Historic District nomination funded by a Certified Local Government grant.
At 833 South Quincy (COA 26-10), staff presenter Jason described a proposal to remove a double-decker rear deck, reconstruct it at the rear of the house, and replace a sliding patio door with a window; the work is located at the rear and is minimally visible from the public right-of-way. Commissioners discussed whether the window replacement restores an earlier (circa 1905) appearance and concluded the change was consistent with prior practice. The commission moved to approve the COA and recorded the approval by voice vote.
At 833 South Jefferson (COA 26-12), the application covered three components: replacement of one-over-one wooden windows (with storm windows over retained diamond-pane windows), removal of a nonhistoric side porch to be replaced with precast concrete steps and metal railing, and gutter/soffit repairs. Staff noted the diamond-pane windows would be retained and recommended approval. A motion to approve passed with a recorded second from Rebecca.
Staff also reported an RFP to select a firm to prepare an Astor Park Historic District nomination using CLG grant funds; responses are due in June, with the commission expected to review candidate firms in June or July. The commission scheduled its next meeting for June 17.
Motions to approve the agenda and to approve April 15 minutes were passed by voice vote earlier in the meeting. The meeting adjourned at the conclusion of the business.
