City Engineer Ryan Gordon delivered a detailed project update to the Glenwood Springs City Council on May 1, describing multiple capital projects that will affect traffic and parks this summer.
Gordon said the summer construction season accelerates after school ends: Coach Miller Drive will be fully closed to traffic from June 4 through roughly mid‑August for an intensive project that includes stormwater work; Soccerfield Road work begins June 4 with sidewalk additions and should wrap up by mid‑July; and 19th Street between Grand Avenue and Blake will be closed for stormwater, sewer and full reconstruction beginning in June and continuing into the summer and possibly September depending on underground conditions. He emphasized alternate routes and coordination with EMS providers to preserve ambulance access.
On Sixth Street he said a raw‑water line connection to North Landing Park is complete, enabling irrigation from the raw‑water system rather than potable water. Gordon also reported progress on the Highway 6/24 multi‑use trail — a 10‑foot concrete shared path with curb and gutter — and said traffic would be restored to two lanes for Memorial Day weekend, with final contract completion expected by August.
Funding specifics cited by Gordon included a $750,000 CDOT grant for the Highway 6/24 project, $200,000 from the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) for the Coach Miller project, and $250,000 from Garfield County for the 19th Street work; other work will use enterprise funds, street infrastructure funds and a reallocated $1 million HSIP award toward the Wolson/Midland roundabout. Gordon said a Safe Streets for All grant application is being prepared in partnership with RFTA.
Gordon also noted a Glenwood Park redesign RFP with strong consultant interest (nine firms attended a pre‑proposal meeting), pedestrian improvements planned on South Grand, and Mitchell Creek culvert redesign work to address floodplain concerns. He reminded residents that some sidewalk and parking areas will be intermittently closed and recommended alternate parking near Pickin or the new thrift‑store lot for trail access during closures.
What’s next: Expect intermittent full street closures beginning in early June; staff will post detours and coordinate public notices, and will return with grant status and scheduling updates as projects proceed.
