Deputy Director Nick Massie told commissioners the 1332 working group is progressing from broad recommendations to operational language and expressed staff intent to map those recommendations to actionable steps the board can consider.
Work group status: Massie said the April virtual meeting included tribal presentations and recommendation drafts; staff are refining language to ensure recommendations are legally defensible and implementable. The work group’s draft recommendations were described as more operational (implementation-focused) than the strategic-plan framework, but Massie noted substantial thematic overlap — stewardship, sustainability, data-driven management and innovation.
What staff will do next: Staff will present the board’s near-final strategic plan to the working group and prepare an implementation package that describes the resource, policy and legal implications of potential recommendations. Massie said the board will have several information sessions before a February 15 deadline to consider final recommendations and any board action.
Why it matters: The 1332 work connects nominations and recommendations (including parcel nominations from the Partners in the Outdoors process) to real-world implementation choices that could change how the board prioritizes projects and partnerships. Commissioners emphasized the need for clear implementation options, costs, and timelines before taking action.
Next steps: Staff committed to drafting a clear implementation plan for work-group recommendations — including possible resource needs — and to return with options and timelines for commission consideration.
